This viral disease of shingles causes a rash in bands or plaques along the affected nerves. The itching, tingling or burning sensations can range from simple discomfort to intolerable pain.
The sooner we treat it, the faster the shingles disappears, and the more likely we are not to suffer from recurring pain (because sometimes the shingles continues to cause pain long after it has disappeared!).
The first sign is usually a burning or tingling sensation and sometimes numbness on or under the skin. The person feels sick, has fever, from chills, from headache or some stomach ache. After a few days, a rash of fluid-filled blisters, similar to chickenpox, appears on the skin; the associated pain may be severe.
When a person gets chickenpox, the virus that causes it remains inactive in the body inside certain cells of the nervous system. As you get older, or if your immune system weakens, the virus can reactivate and multiply, causing the shingles rash.
